Amanda Cole's compositions feature microtonal structures, interference beats and fusions of electronic and acoustic timbres. She has a BMus(Hons.1) and a PhD in composition from the Sydney Conservatorium. In 2006, she travelled to London to study electroacoustic composition with Professor Denis Smalley at City University.
Cole's microtonal compositions include percussion trios for a purpose built Microtonal Glass Harmonica, a string quartet using freeze pedals and choral works in just intonation tuning. She has written concert music pieces for acoustic instruments in combination with electronic music tracks made from sine tones. These piece include: Vibraphone Theories (2006) for vibraphone and sine tones, Loom Patterns (2018) for portable organ and sine tones, Barcelona Bells (2019) for carillon and sine tones and Oracle Chamber (2020) for bass flute, baritone saxophone and sine tones.
Her music has been performed by Synergy Percussion, Ensemble Offspring, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Chorus, The Noise String Quartet and Kroumata (Sweden). Her music has been performed at the Sydney Opera House, Art Gallery of NSW, Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), Casula Powerhouse, Salamanca Arts Centre (Hobart) and the Palau de la Generalitat in Barcelona. Cole's work has been included in the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) festival, the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) and the N.E.O. Voice Festival (Los Angeles), Dark MOFO (Hobart), Melbourne Festival, Sydney Biennale and Vivid (Sydney).
EARLY COLLABORATIONS
In 2008, Amanda created THE ELASTIC BAND, an interactive sound installation with artists Jo Cuzzi and Patsy Black, that was exhibited at Firstdraft Gallery (Sydney). In 2010 Amanda collaborated with New Media artist Warren Armstrong to create the Twitter Hymn Book, an endless, self-generating sound installation created entirely from Twitter updates, which was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Blake Art Prize. Amanda also collaborated with New York graphic designer Ellen Lupton to produce a work for the group exhibition Stereotyped, at the Object Gallery, Sydney.
CURRENT COLLABORATIONS
In 2016 Amanda collaborated with visual artist Micheala Gleave and programmer Warren Armstrong to create A Galaxy of Suns, which is a smart phone app and associated choral performance that ‘plays’ the stars as they rise and set over 360˚ of the horizon – for any location on Earth. The choral version of this piece has been performed at Dark Mofo (2016), Bristol Biennial (2016), Melbourne Festival (2017) and the Horizon Festival (2019). This same creative team created the Dark MOFO installation Coronal Mass, which was a finalist in the 2020 Art Music Awards in the Electroacoustic/Sound Art Work of the Year category.
In 2021 Amanda collaborated with artist Michaela Gleave and percussionist Louise Devenish on a piece titled ‘Cosmic Time’, which was premiered at the Tarrawarra Biennale. An album length studio recording of this work will be released later in 2022.
