Amanda’s compositions feature microtonal structures, interference beats and fusions of electronic and acoustic timbres. She has a BMus(Hons.1) and a PhD in composition from the Sydney Conservatorium, where she studied with Greg Schiemer, Anthony Hood, Bozidar Kos, Trevor Pearce and Michael Smetanin. In 2006, she travelled to London to study electroacoustic composition with Denis Smalley at City University.
Amanda’s microtonal compositions include four percussion trios for a purpose built Microtonal Glass Harmonica, a microtonal string quartet for string harmonics and sine tones and has made an audio-visual installation that maps pitch to hue. Her microtonal composition Vibraphone Theories was performed by Kroumata in Sweden for the 2009 International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) festival. This piece was also recorded by Portuguese percussionist Nuno Aroso for his CD Technicolor. She recently composed a Clarini duet, that was performed by Ensemble Offspring at the Utzon room of the Sydney Opera House in their concert of music in just intonation tuning called ‘Partch’s Bastards’.
Amanda also works in the New Media area and creates works in collaboration with visual artists.In 2008, Amanda created THE ELASTIC BAND, an interactive sound installation with artists Jo Cuzzi and Patsy Black, that was exhibited at Firstdraft Gallery(Sydney). In 2010 Amanda collaborated with New Media artist Warren Armstrong to create the Twitter Hymn Book, an endless, self-generating sound installation created entirely from Twitter updates. This piece was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Blake Art Prize and was exhibited at the National Arts School gallery. In 2010, Amanda also collaborated with New York graphic designer Ellen Lupton to produce a work for the group exhibition Stereotyped, at the Object Gallery, Sydney.
Amanda Cole is a composer of instrumental and electronic New Music. She has been commissioned, performed and recorded: by Kroumata (Sweden 2009), ISCM Festival (New York City 2010), Ensemble Offspring (Sydney Opera House 2011), Synergy Percussion (Casula Powerhouse, Sydney 2012), the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (Sydney 2013) and The Noise String Quartet (2014), Gurt Lush and Bristol MAN Chorus (Bristol Biennial 2016) and The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Chorus (Dark Mofo Hobart, 2016). Amanda was a finalist in the 2010 Blake Prize for the project Twitter Hymn Book, and in 2013 awarded an Australia Council Creative Arts Fellowship. Amanda has recently been working with visual artist Micheala Gleave and programmer Warren Armstrong to create ‘A Galaxy of Suns’, which is a smart phone app and associated choral performance that ‘plays’ the stars as they rise and set over 360˚ of the horizon – for any location on Earth.
